The security and performance of reserved resources

Reserved Virtual Servers (RVS) put entire CPU cores in your hands. Every plan includes NVMe storage, and lets you add more NVMe and HDD.

Simply an amazing team & hosting company! My company's multiple web servers had all been with AWS for the last 8 years. AWS is a big hairy beast to even navigate one's way around all their services, so I required an experienced System's Admin to look after our servers and infrastructure.

As we needed to upgrade all our servers, I decided to go looking and found SiteHost. I submitted a brief via SiteHost's website one late night and in the morning, I received a phone call ... from one of SiteHost's founding directors. Well, that was a great start!

SiteHost's client systems, infrastructure, and team are all simply amazing. The control panel for setting up new servers, managing them, deploying and upgrading etc, is just sooo easy and intuitive! The support and sales team are all super responsive, friendly, patient and knowledgeable. The move to SiteHost has been the smartest business decision (technically, financially and support-wise) I've made in a long time! ★★★★★

All the storage you need

Each RVS starts with 400-2000GB of NVMe storage. Need more? Mix and match extra terabytes of faster NVMe and cheaper HDD for archiving.

Hardware

We're serious about hardware. RVS run on 3rd generation, AMD EPYC Milan series CPUs, include NVMe storage, and are configured for performance.

Privacy and security

Unlike a lot of other virtual servers out there, RVS allow private networking and firewalling, and deliver the security of unshared CPU cores.

Fault tolerant storage

Take confidence from drives set up in mirrored RAID 10. Get peace-of-mind, knowing that any single drive failure will be handled gracefully by our team.

Add automated backups

Add backups and we'll take daily snapshots to store offsite for 14 days. Quick streaming restores are built in and take only minutes, regardless of size.

Save with longer contracts

There's a minimum 12 month commitment for Reserved Virtual Servers. Sign up for a 24 or 36 month term and watch your monthly costs drop.

Linux or Windows

Linux and Windows are both available out of the box, in multiple versions. Need something more specialised? We can probably accommodate that as well - just ask.

Server Management

Add optional Server Management and our experts will monitor your server and respond to issues any time. Sleep well at night or even take a holiday.

Root access

Unmanaged servers come with full root or admin access, so BYO sysadmin. Install any packages or applications you want and set them up how you like.

Reserved Virtual Server plans, pricing and terms

Pick your dedicated cores, then add the extra storage you need. Available in Auckland and Sydney.

RVS: A quick overview

Reserved Virtual Servers are great if you need a lot of computing power, and you need it for at least 12 months. Reserved CPU cores offer stronger data security over typical Virtual Servers, at a lower cost than fully Dedicated Servers.

How our RVS platform works

Similar to 'reserved instances' that you might have seen elsewhere, our RVS platform combines the best bits of Dedicated Servers and virtualisation offerings. Massive, high quality servers are split into a few large virtual servers. Each one comes with dedicated memory and CPU cores.

Tiered storage lets you include low-cost HDD for archiving data alongside NVMe drives for fast performance. Drives are shared, with IOPS limits to protect against noisy neighbours.

It's the perfect mix - the performance of dedicated resources and cost-effectiveness of virtualised servers.

Who RVS is for

Dedicated resources are ideal for higher technical requirements, like running large applications. If a more traditional VM isn't going to offer you enough compute, this is where to look next.

In terms of processing speed, Reserved Virtual Servers sit between our Standard and High Performance Virtual Servers.

When your storage requirements go beyond what Virtual Servers offer, Reserved Virtual Servers are the logical step up. Tiered storage lets you balance cost and performance as you add extra terabytes.

Minimum contract term

There's a minimum contract period of 12 months for any Reserved Virtual Server. Longer contract terms of 24 or 36 months are available, and they come with a lower monthly price tag. Fixed prices can be a big help in a world where hardware shortages are expected to keep disrupting markets.

If you need something for the short-term, a Linux Virtual Server or Windows Virtual Server comes with no minimum term.

Common Questions

  • Virtual Server (VPS) has the lowest cost and is the only option with no contract term. There's a choice of standard or high performance. They offer fewer resources, some of which are shared between multiple servers. The virtualisation platform enables features like quick snapshots and streaming backup restores, private networking, and more.
  • Reserved Virtual Server (RVS) costs more, because you get more. While it's still virtualised, it has dedicated resources including reserved CPU cores. This meets higher data security requirements than Virtual Servers. It's possible to implement tiered storage, i.e. run faster NVMe and cheaper HDD drives side-by-side. All up, you can access more resources than with Virtual Servers and still not have to pay for all the hardware and associated costs yourself. There is a 12-month minimum term.
  • Finally there are Dedicated Servers which are entire machines for your exclusive use. These offer the most power and are the only option that gives you a whole physical server to yourself. This can make them more expensive and less fault tolerant than virtual offerings.
This is something we discuss on case by case basis with each customer, but as a general rule of thumb if you are upgrading to a larger server with increased spend there's no penalty for exiting the contract early. You would however be required to sign a new contract with a new term.
24/7 Management is a highly recommended optional extra, especially if your server will be hosting critical applications or websites where uptime is important. Problems arise, downtime happens, and you always have something else to be doing rather than worrying about infrastructure. Who would respond at 3am if there's an urgent problem, especially if you don't have your own dedicated system engineers? With 24/7 Management, you know the answer.
We have an uptime guarantee of 99.9% across our Cloud Containers, Virtual Servers and Reserved Virtual Servers. We also offer comprehensive SLAs as part of our 24/7 Management. You can read more about our uptime guarantee and getting a full SLA in our knowledge base.
On HDDs and NVMe drives that are built into our Reserved Virtual Servers, users' IOPS (input/output operations per second) are capped at an upper limit. Because these drives are shared, we need to ensure that everyone gets their fair share of the resource on offer. IOPS caps prevent a "noisy neighbour" from taking up too much of a given drive's operational capacity. In reality, NVMe drives are so quick that IOPS limits will be reached only rarely, if at all. HDDs, which are slower and ought to be used for archiving rather than as more active storage, are where IOPS limits are more important.

AlphaOne have been with SiteHost since day one. They managed our production servers except few that we manage it our own. Somehow, one of our servers broke down and I spent almost 4 hours troubleshooting it and I gave up because I have other things to fix. I asked SiteHost help. Not hours later, but minutes later they emailed and boom! Issue fixed! That quick! So glad it's fixed before the sunrise or else my team can't work until our Gitlab server is fixed. Thank you SiteHost. Game changer! ★★★★★
